MagicJack Plus 2014 – Not Ready for Prime Time?

Problems with PIN numbers and extensions

I've fielded hundreds of questions regarding magicJack, and I've begun getting feedback on the magicJack Plus 2014. Specifically, some users are having a hard time getting it to work with PIN numbers or security codes, extensions, etc. – any time they have to use the keypad to dial in additional information after their call has been connected. Check it out, and let me know if you would – perhaps magicJack has gotten the problem sorted out.

Improved Audio Quality??

MagicJack claims that there is a significant improvement in audio quality provided by the magicJack Plus 2014, but that claim is not supported by testing the new magicJack Plus 2014 versus the old magicJack Plus. Users uploaded several online tests to YouTube; feel free to listen and judge for yourself. If there's any improvement in audio quality in the magicJack Plus 2014, I don't hear it.

New Features – Not Enabled!!

You also need to be aware the wi-fi capability of the 2014 is not yet enabled – in fact, none of the additional bells and whistles (memory port or USB ports) have any additional functionality as of November, 2013. It seems the magicJack 2014 Plus isn't quite ready for prime time yet. For those considering its purchase, the next question should be “How much more money will I have to fork over to enable wi-fi or make use of the additional ports in the magicJack Plus 2014?” Inquiring minds want to know!

MagicJack Plus 2014 Sneaky Billing Alert!

You also need to know that the 6 month subscription for the 2014 is only valid only if you set up a new account and get a new number for the device. If you elect to transfer your old number, any remaining subscription time for your old magicJack is transferred to the magicJack Plus 2014, and the old device is deactivated by magicJack. The 6 months you bought with your new magicJack Plus 2014 simply evaporates. To keep any remaining time on your old subscription and the 6 months you purchased with your new magicJack Plus 2014, you need to get a new number for the new dongle. You can either keep your old number, or you can keep the 6 months of subscription time you bought – but not both. Neat trick, magicJack.

The bottom line? I see no reason to upgrade an existing magicJack to the new magicJack Plus 2014, and question whether it's worthwhile to purchase it to set up a new magicJack account. Both the original magicjack and the original magicJack Plus are both still available at Amazon – and both are proven performers.

Part two: should you upgrade to magicJack Plus 2014?
