GVJack – A Virtual Phone Number for MagicJack

A Free Phone? GVJack Has You Covered

TGVJack Features Dashboardhe internet search giant Google has offered a free telephony service called Google Voice since March of 2009. Many believe that the service will remain free, and GVJack combines that free service with magicJack – even an expired magicJack! This is as close to a free lunch as it gets. For under $30 you can set up your home phone service, and not pay a penny more as the years go by. Your home phone includes free calls to US and Canadian phone numbers (including Alaska and Hawaii), as well as a host of other advanced features.

Why am I mentioning Google on a website devoted to Magic Jack? Simply put, you can now make use of a new plugin called GVJack which allows you to make use of new, used, or expired Magic Jack dongles to make free phone calls to US and Canadian phone numbers – with no annual phone charge!

As long as you have an active magicJack account, you can switch easily between Google Voice and MagicJack. That means you don’t need to worry about burning the magicJack bridge behind you when you experiment with Google Voice. GVJack works with Windows based machines, but sadly won’t work with Intel based Macs. It may work with Parallels on a Mac, but it’s probably less expensive to install it on a thinclient.

GVJack provides some additional benefits which are not available to users of MagicJack’s phone service. For example, MagicJack users cannot call anywhere in the state of Alaska or Hawaii due to high termination fees associated with those calls. Similarly, MagicJack users cannot call many rural numbers in the US mainland – for the same reason. Those using GVJack do not have similar limitations – they are able to make calls to nearly any US or Canadian phone number for free. GVJack also lets you make a conventional 3-way phone call, which MagicJack customers are unable to do.

Don’t get me wrong – GVJack isn’t free. The Pro version costs $19.95, but it’s a one time purchase – there is no monthly or annual fee. As long as Google Voice remains free, your home phone service is also free – completely free! This is not a second class phone system.

Hassled and harried man I do think this little app is cheap at twice the price, but I do want to disclose that I’m an affiliate seller for GVJack and earn $3 or $4 on each sale. If you feel the app can make your life a little simpler, click on this GVJack link and you’ll be able to download the little beauty and begin using it to brighten your day too.

Do you have a question or comment about how to use GV Jack with your used or expired magicJack? Drop a note in the comment box below and put it out there for all to see! You may find the answer you’re looking for – or perhaps you’ll hear from another sympathetic user.

  1. I have a magic jack plus plugged direct

into the wall recpt, not using a pc. I’am using an magic jack app on a iPad. How can I use the managemagicjack software on the iPad?  Iam interested in the block call feature.

    1. Greetings Paul –

Unfortunately, the MagicFeatures plugin from Pcphonesoft only works with Windows computers, and then only if the magicJack is plugged into the computer. It’s for that reason that I’ve set up a tiny computer (a thinclient), and keep my magicJack plugged into it. The little computer only uses about 20 watts, and lets me take advantage of the benefits of MagicFeatures.

      Perhaps worth considering?

  2. I need to forward a google voice number to a cell phone that already has a google voice number forwarded to it. Setting it as home or work to avoid the one google voice number per cell phone rule won’t work as I do a lot of texting through the original google voice number. (I know I can get those texts in email, but that’s a pain and I’d like to avoid it.) Can I use GVJack to make this happen? The new google voice line I’m trying to connect does not need the texting ability, I just need calls to that google voice number to come to my cell phone. Any other ideas would be great too!

    1. Hi Christina!

You should be able to get your second Google Voice number to forward to your cell phone. See if this instruction page gets the job done for you. You’ll be speaking through your mobile number (or your magicJack number if you’ve got the app), but it should be doable. I currently have 3 numbers on my cell phone – my mobile number (through Ting), my magicJack number, and my Google Voice number. Good Grief!

  3. Hi, I have a Magic Jack Plus I haven’t used in 2 years. If I subscribe to GVJack, are you saying all I have to pay for is $20 and I will be able to use my landline phone? Or do I have to download an app on my computer for it to work? What I want to do is use my telephone apparatus instead of my cell phone.

I have Windows 10. Will GVJack work on my computer?

    1. Hi Grace –

The GVJack web page doesn’t address Windows 10 compatibility – but others’ comments on the web indicate the GVJack doesn’t work with Windows 10.

If you’d care to try, they do offer a 7 day money back guarantee. You need to download the app to your computer and install it as you would any other program, and you need to have your magicJack dongle plugged into that computer. Lastly, you need to get a Google Voice number. Google started the system in 2009, and has continued to support the free phone service since then.

You can also have calls to that number forward to another number. It takes a few minutes to sort out your options, but it can be fairly powerful.

If it doesn’t work, you can ask for your money back within 7 days – and let me know how it went!
